Cleanroom Certification

KCH Cleanrooms provides cleanroom certification testing and ISO 14644-1 classification support for facilities across the Bay Area and Northern California. Testing is scoped to your cleanroom, required classification, and the standards or customer protocols that apply.

Airborne particle counts can help document room cleanliness at the time of testing. We review the target ISO class, sample locations, occupancy condition, and any additional test requirements before scheduling.

Testing scope

What cleanroom certification may include

ISO 14644-1 classifies air cleanliness by airborne particle concentration. A particle counter measures selected particle sizes at designated sample locations. Results support a classification for the agreed room conditions and occupancy state.

The exact certification scope depends on the cleanroom and the requirements it must meet. KCH confirms the requested tests and documentation with you before preparing a quote.

Additional tests may be specified

  • Installed HEPA filter integrity or leak testing
  • Airflow volume, velocity, or air-change measurements
  • Room pressure differential testing
  • Airflow direction and visualization
  • Room recovery, temperature, or humidity testing
  • Viable air or surface sampling
These measurements use separate methods and equipment. A particle counter does not measure air changes per hour, filter integrity, room pressure, or viable microorganisms. Include any required tests in your inquiry so they can be scoped correctly.
Standards and classification

Which cleanroom standard applies?

ISO 14644-1

Defines air cleanliness classification by airborne particle concentration. It does not determine whether particles are viable microorganisms or verify every cleanroom performance requirement.

ISO 14644-3

Provides methods for testing cleanroom performance beyond particle concentration. The chosen tests depend on the room, its use, and the requirements agreed for the project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about cleanroom certification testing in the Bay Area and Northern California.

What is cleanroom certification?

Cleanroom certification is a defined set of tests and documented results used to evaluate whether a controlled environment meets specified cleanliness or performance requirements. The scope depends on the room, its use, and the applicable standard or customer protocol.

Does a particle count certify the entire cleanroom?

A particle count measures airborne particle concentration at agreed sample locations and can support ISO 14644-1 air cleanliness classification. Other requirements may call for separate testing of filters, airflow, pressure, recovery, environmental conditions, or viable contamination.

Can a particle counter measure air changes per hour?

No. Air changes per hour are calculated from measured airflow volume and the room’s volume. That requires an appropriate airflow method and equipment. A particle counter measures airborne particle concentration.

Does particle testing detect bacteria or other microorganisms?

A standard airborne particle counter measures non-viable particles. It does not determine whether a particle is a living microorganism. Viable air or surface sampling is a separate test that may be needed for some applications.

What information should I provide for a quote?

Share the facility location, cleanroom dimensions or approximate area, target ISO class, reason for testing, preferred schedule, and any required test list or protocol. Include whether the room needs to be tested as-built, at-rest, or operational if you know.

How should we prepare for the testing visit?

Preparation depends on the agreed test method and occupancy condition. KCH will confirm room conditions, HVAC operation, cleaning or settling period, access, and other preparation details when reviewing the scope.
